Cook Canada Receives Approval for Decision marks world's first approval for innovative retrievable blood clot filter Bloomington, Ind. - Cook (Canada) Inc., a COOK company, has received licensing from Health Canada for the Celect™ Vena Cava Filter Set, a "second generation" version of the clinically proven Günther Tulip™ Filter Set engineered with design features to greatly enhance its retrieval from the vena cava. "Cook's Celect filter builds upon the proven clinical success of Cook's earlier retrievable vena cava filter design to bring physicians in Canada a new choice when treating patients at higher risk of blood clots and pulmonary embolism due to trauma or surgery," explained Bill Bobbie, president of Cook (Canada) Inc. "Everyone at Cook Canada is especially pleased that we are the first major medical market to earn regulatory approval for this major improvement in patient care technology." A vena cava filter is an expandable metal device placed within the vena cava using a catheter. Once in place, the device opens, allowing it to trap potentially hazardous blood clots from moving into the pulmonary system, which can be fatal. Cook's new Celect filter has been engineered to allow retrieval of the filter after greater lengths of time than was previously possible with the Günther filter. In animal trials, the Celect filter has been retrieved without difficulty or complication after being implanted for more than one year, which may prove beneficial to human patients whose risk of pulmonary embolism has lessened sufficiently over time to allow the filter to be withdrawn. The world's largest privately held manufacturer of medical devices with international headquarters in Bloomington, Ind., COOK® (www.cookmedical.com/) is a leading designer, manufacturer and global distributor of minimally invasive medical device technology for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Since its founding in 1963, Cook has created innovative technologies for drug-eluting and bare metal stents, aortic and vascular endografts, catheters, wire guides, introducer needles and sheaths, embolization coils, medical biomaterials and contract manufacturing of biopharmaceuticals, vena cava filters and other minimally invasive medical devices for radiology, cardiology, urology and women's health, critical care medicine, surgery, gastroenterology, bone access and endovascular therapies.
