Since its founding in 1984, Star of Indiana has pursued excellence in musical performance and artistic expression. Cook Group has sponsored this innovative organization because of the positive experience young performers participating in Star of Indiana gain, the group's encouragement of continuing music education, and its support of local community service activities in Bloomington, Ind. During its first ten seasons, Star of Indiana competed within Drum Corps International (DCI), an organized competition involving 128-member groups presenting rigorously disciplined, 12-minute routines. In 1991, Star won the DCI World Championship. Soon thereafter, the group evolved to create Brass Theater, a stage show that was featured on PBS and at such prestigious venues as Lincoln Center, Hollywood Bowl and Tanglewood. The latest incarnation of Star's development as a performing ensemble is Blast!, which debuted at London's Apollo, Hammersmith Theatre in December 1999. Incorporating brass and percussion instrumental music and other musical elements, dramatic lighting, costuming and stage effects, vibrant choreography and other elements associated with major stage productions, Blast! has received rave critical reviews and drawn standing ovations. Blast! was the winner of the 2001 Tony® Award for "Best Theatrical Event" and 2001 Emmy® Award winner for "Best Choreography," and is currently touring North America and Japan. |
